North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Looking back, a loss against Esh Group Eagles Newcastle in front of the BBC Sport cameras could, and perhaps should, have been the start of a three-game losing streak for the defending champions.

However, Leicester Riders dug themselves out of a hole not once, but twice in their next two outings to keep up the pressure on the league leaders.

Rob Paternostro’s side came from 15 down in the fourth to beat Plymouth Raiders in overtime on the road before needing another extra period in a comeback win against London Lions.

The never-say-die attitude bodes well for future tests along the road heading into 2017.

“The two comeback OT wins show our resilience as a cohesive unit and the heart of our team when our backs against the wall,” said Riders guard, Brandon Clark.

“I wouldn’t say the loss to Newcastle was important, I feel it was just a loss which we learned that our style of play, not just against them, but every team needs to be elevated.”

He added: “With the help of my team-mates and coaches, I am settled well at the moment and ready for the rest of the season.

“I think we are sitting in a great position right now and our best basketball is still ahead of us.”

Leicester host Leeds Force tonight looking to complete a season sweep, while Newcastle head on the road to face Manchester Giants.

This week’s live game on BBC Sport takes place at the Emirates Arena as Glasgow Rocks welcome Cheshire Phoenix – who play their second game since parting ways with head coach Colin O’Reilly.

There are also two more games this evening to round out 2016 in style with Worcester Wolves taking on Plymouth Raiders and London Lions going up against DBL Sharks Sheffield in a top-five clash.

The Lions return to action on Sunday for a New Years Day fixture away at Surrey Scorchers with both teams looking to set the tone for a successful 2017.
