North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

CaptureFOOD lovers at a leading North East hotel are being served an afternoon tea with a difference.

At historic Lumley Castle Hotel, Chester-le-Street, sandwiches have been replaced by Scotch eggs and pastries by pasties, in a savoury twist to traditional teatime treats.

The new savoury afternoon tea menu replaces the lunch menu on Mondays and Fridays and has been designed to cater for those who want a less formal midday meal or who crave a heartier mid-afternoon snack.

Among the delicacies on offer are ham and pease pudding rolls, bacon and leek quiche, pork, apple and black pudding sausage rolls, sun-dried tomato and basil Scotch eggs, hand raised pork pies and Newcastle Brown Ale chutney.

These are followed by scones with jam and clotted cream, a chocolate brownie and a lemon posset, along with a choice of speciality teas.

“We were increasingly finding that diners at the start and end of the working week were looking for a cross between lunch and afternoon tea,” said head chef Richard Chilver.

“They often wanted to eat outside conventional lunch hours and enjoy something a little more substantial than a traditional afternoon tea – and so we came up with this savoury alternative.

“Where possible we’ve used locally produced ingredients and so far the feedback has been excellent – our savoury teas are really hitting the spot.”

Savoury afternoon teas are served on Mondays and Fridays from noon until 5pm and cost £17.50 per person.Traditional afternoon tea is also served every afternoon.
