In 2014 there were 356,772 baby boys born in England and Wales compared to 358,383 in 2013. Jack still remains the most popular name for boy.
There were 340,129 baby girls born in 2013, whereas this figure decreased in 2014 when 338,461 baby girls were born in England and Wales. The most popular name for a girl has remained as Amelia.
We have broken this down into our region.
North East Baby Names
Our region shows that both the boy and girl names for babies within the North East of England have remained the same since 2013. The names within the top ten for both genders have not seen much of a change with the exception of some added names to the list in 2014.
Girls
Overall there were less baby girls born in 2014 in the North East of England compared to in 2013. There were a total of 13,991 girls born in 2013 and 13,742 in 2014 in the North East.
Although the name Amelia has been the most popular baby name in both 2013 and 2014, the number of babies with this name has decreased by 25 babies in 2014. However Amelia has still been by far the most popular baby name with the closest contender being Olivia in both years; which is the second most popular ranked baby name for both 2013 and 2014.
Again, the name Olivia has seen a fall in the amount of babies being called this name in 2014. In 2013 there were a total of 260 babies being named this, whereas this dropped in 2014 when only 248 were given this name in the North East.
In 2013 Ava was the third ranked name with 252 baby girls being named this, but in 2014 in third place was the name Emily, being just 3 less babies than Olivia. Ava was ranked as the fourth most popular baby name in 2014 with 232 babies being called this, which is 20 less than the previous year.
Jessica has fallen by two places in the space of a year. This name was in 6th position with 194 babies being named this in 2013, but has dropped down to 8th place with a significant drop of 42, leaving just 152 babies being given this name.
Poppy and Ella were also within the top ten baby girl names in the North East of England in 2013 but were both replaced by Lily and Lucy in 2014.

Boys
Overall there were less baby boys born in 2014 in the North East of England compared to in 2013. There were a total of 14,970 boys born in 2013 and 14,714 in 2014 in the North East.
Although the name Jack has been the most popular baby name in both 2013 and 2014, the number of babies with this name has decreased by 12 babies in 2014. However Amelia has still been by far the most popular baby name with the closest contender being Oliver in both years; which is the second most popular ranked baby name for both 2013 and 2014.
However the name Oliver has seen a dramatic decrease in the amount of babies being called this name in 2014. In 2013 there were a total of 343 babies being named this name, whereas this figure dropped in 2014 when only 309 were given this name in the North East. This is a fall of 34 which is quite a significant decrease.
The third ranked baby boy name in 2013 was Harry with 342 babies being named this, but in 2014 in third place was the name Charlie. Harry was ranked as the fourth most popular baby boy name in 2014 with 282 babies being called this, which is 60 less than the previous year.
Ranked as the fifth most popular baby boy name in 2013 with 307 babies being named this, James then dropped to joint 6th place with Thomas in 2013, when only 248 boys were given those names in the North East. Thomas was ranked as the 7th most popular name in 2013 with 246 babies being called this, and this figure increased by 2 in 2014, meaning that both Thomas and James were the 6th most popular baby boy names in 2014
Joseph was the ninth popular boy name in 2013 with 209 babies being named this name, but again there was a decrease in the amount of babies being given this name in 2014 as the figure dropped down to 201. This meant that in 2014 Joseph was in joint 9th place along with the name Isaac, which was introduced to the top ten baby boy names in the North East in 2014. William was ranked as the 10th most popular name for a baby boy in the North East in 2013 with 204 babies being named this, but in 2014 this name did not make the list.

Girls
The top three most popular baby girl names in England between 2013 and 2014 have all remained the same, being Amelia, Olivia and Emily. However the figures for the name Amelia decreased from 5,265 in 2013, down to 5,011 in 2014. In contrast to this, Olivia, the second most popular baby girl name, increased from 4,333 in 2013 to 4,477 in 2014. Emily was another name; like Amelia, that decreased. This figure fell by 64 from 3,865 in 2013 to 3,801 in 2014.
In addition to Emily being in third place in 2014, the name Isla also had 3,801 babies being named this which was an increase from the 3,555 baby girls being named this in 2013.
The fourth most popular baby girl name in 2013 in England was Jessica with 3,386, but this particular name dropped down to 8th place in 2014 which only 2,874 babies being named this, which is a decrease of 512 babies.
Mia was the tenth most popular baby girl name in 2013 with 2,821 babies being named this, but in 2014, this name did not make the top 10. In replacement of the name Mia was the name Lily in 2014 which was ranked at number 10 with 2,815 babies being given this name.

The top six most popular baby boy names in England between 2013 and 2014 have all remained the same, being Oliver, Jack, Harry, Jacob, Charlie and Thomas. However, in general the figures for the those names have seen a decrease from 2013 to 2014.
7th to 9th place in 2013 were Oscar, James and William. Oscar had a total of 4,307 baby boys being named this name, James had 4,072 and 4,053 boys were named William. In 2014 all three of these named decreased and dropped down one place each in the top ten baby boy names in England table.
In contrast to this, George had 4,041 baby boys named this in 2013 and this name was the tenth most popular name. However there were 17 more boys named this in 2014 compared to the previous year. This meant that George was ranked as the 7th most popular baby boy name in England in 2014.
