A joinery firm whose turnover has increased nearly tenfold in its first four years of trading is planning further growth following another successful year.

Original Joinery, which is based in Thornaby but works across the UK, offers a range of services, including large scale residential, hotels and bespoke projects. Recent work includes Backworth primary school, several Premier Inns and over 600 apartments.

Managing director Kyle Fowler said: “Our turnover has grown from £250,000 in 2014, when we were founded, to £2.3m last year, and our profit remains steady at 20 per cent year on year. This year we expect to reach turnover of approximately £3.5m, thanks to new projects and secured work.”

Explaining the company’s origins, Kyle said: “The firm started with me and one other joiner – now I have up to 50 trades people working for me.

“We work on projects across the UK, and pride ourselves on being a lean company, our whole management team working remotely.

“I’m keen to keep up the momentum, and my growth plans for 2019 are as ambitious as every year preceding them. I’m planning to employ a quantity surveyor and another project manager, as well as open an office in Birmingham.”

The firm has been supported in its success by staff at Stockton-based accountancy firm Anderson Barrowcliff.

Kyle said: “James Dale at Anderson Barrowcliff has been my accountant since the business started and has been invaluable as a sounding board, accountant and business advisor.

“It was this relationship which enabled a simple transition for Luke Hopkins who heads up their outsourcing department to take over this aspect.

“I know I can trust the figures they are presenting me with, meaning I can concentrate on all the other items I need to in the running of the business. The management accounts and forecasts enable me to track and assess the margins we are operating at and react quickly to any projects which seem to be slipping.”

Luke, a CIMA qualified management accountant at Anderson Barrowcliff, said: “It’s been amazing to see how far Original Joinery has come in such a short space of time, and I’m pleased we have been part of the journey.

“Kyle is great to work with and I’m sure he will continue to drive Original Joinery to even greater success in the years to come.”
