Viv WatsonPATIENTS with complex neurological injuries can now benefit from a smoother transition to community living thanks to a new public private partnership.

Walkergate Park Centre for neuro rehabilitation and neuropsychiatry in Newcastle has joined forces with step-forward rehabilitation and care specialists Keiro, to provide input at Chase Park Neuro Centre in Gateshead and The Gateway in Middlesbrough, working as part of the Chase Park team.

Specialist rehabilitation consultants and staff including physio, occupational and speech / language therapists from Walkergate Park will work with staff at Keiro to provide further specialist training to enable care for clients with prolonged disorders of consciousness or those who are better known as being minimally conscious.

Keiro’s managing director, Viv Watson, said: “As a company we continually strive to ensure we have the best possible services and people available for all of our clients and to meet all of their individual needs.

“As one of the leading specialists in the country we feel very privileged to be able to gain valuable training and staff input from Walkergate Park, which will help to continue a flourishing partnership.”

The collaboration means that patients can continue their post-acute rehabilitation, complex care and support at Chase Park and The Gateway. The provision of an extended and integrated service from hospital into the community releases bed capacity at Walkergate Park allowing its service and team to concentrate on more complex rehabilitation patients and provide better outcomes for patients.

Directorate manager for adult specialist services at Walkergate Park, David Muir, said: “Having a partner that has staff skilled in receiving our patients will speed up the transfer process, allow much smoother transition and reduce the number of our delayed discharges.

“It will also give patients and their family’s reassurance that the care and treatment that they will receive on transfer from Walkergate Park will remain of the highest standard.

“This is an exciting opportunity for both services to work together to improve patient and families’ experience and treatment outcomes.”
