North East employer Banks Property has put forward proposals for the Hazlerigg scheme, which would be located on a 20-hectare site to the west of Hazlerigg and south of Brunswick village. The site was allocated within the joint Newcastle and Gateshead Core Strategy as a suitable location for this type of residential development.
The scheme, which would be created in line with the principles of sustainable development, would include approximately 462 homes, and would be designed to complement and enhance the existing character of the local area, as well as bringing with it a wide range of economic, social, environmental, employment and supply chain benefits.
Around 140 people attended a community exhibition about the plans for the Hazlerigg development back in June, and a programme of meetings with local people, businesses and community organisations has since been carried out to ensure all interested parties could put forward their ideas and comments about Banks Property’s proposals.
The Banks Group currently employs around 400 people in the North East of England and Scotland, with over 200 people located at the nearby Brenkley Lane and Shotton surface mines, which jointly contribute around £35m to the regional economy every year through wages, investments and the local supply chain, as well as more than £400,000 in annual business rates to Northumberland County Council and Newcastle City Council.
Mark Dowdall, environment and community director at The Banks Group, says: “This is a high-quality development in a location which we know will be very popular with people wanting to move into or stay in the area, and we’re very pleased to have now reached this landmark in its progression.
“The local feedback we’ve collected over the last few months has been very useful to our project team as they’ve finalised our planning application, and we believe the Hazlerigg development offers a very suitable way of helping to meet the widely-acknowledged need for more homes to be built across the North East.
“As well as offering these much-needed new homes, this development could bring many other tangible benefits to the local area, including new jobs, new commercial opportunities for local companies and substantial funding for community improvements that would make a real, long-term difference to the facilities that local residents enjoy.

“We’re confident that our Hazlerigg scheme offers the right kind of high-quality home in a wholly suitable location, and we hope Newcastle City Council’s planning committee will be minded to support our approach when they come to consider our proposals.”
