Ripon Grammar tops northern schools league table

HIGH-ACHIEVING students have ensured Ripon Grammar School has topped The Sunday Times league table for the top state schools in the North for the seventh year running.

Following another summer of exceptional exam results, the school was placed 67th nationally in the newspaper’s Parent Power Schools Guide 2020, which identifies the 2,000 highest-achieving schools in the UK.

Headmaster Jonathan Webb said: “This is testimony to both the hard work and commitment of our students and the dedication of our staff. But, as everyone at RGS knows, there is so much more to us than exam results.

“We offer an exceptional all-round education, with a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including strong music, drama and sport, ensuring our students leave here as well-balanced, rounded and grounded individuals, well prepared for life beyond school.”

Parent Power, widely acknowledged as the most authoritative survey of the country’s best schools, determines ranking according to recent examination results.

Out of 149 students taking A-levels at RGS in the summer, ten per cent achieved a clean sweep of all A*s, with 48.5% of grades at A*/A and 76.2% at A*-B.

At GCSE, 40 per cent of all grades were at 9-8 (the equivalent of the old A*) and 62.2% of grades were 9-7 (formerly A*-A).

Parent Power judges schools by the percentage of examination entries gaining A*-B grades at A-level (which is given double weighting) and the percentage returning A* and A grades, and those graded 9, 8 and 7 at GCSE.
