Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

203Action that will be taken to ensure young people leaving care in County Durham get the help and support they need is set out in a report to be considered by councillors.

The Care Leavers Strategy for County Durham will be presented to members of Durham County Council’s Cabinet when they meet next week (Weds 16 Dec).

The strategy sets out how the county council, working with partners, will ensure that young people leaving care can continue to get the support they need – particularly in relation to health, housing, education, employment and finance – to help them reach their potential and be successful in life.

Cllr Ossie Johnson, Cabinet member for children and young people’s services at Durham County Council, said: “National evidence suggests that outcomes for young people leaving care are poor compare to their peers.

“It is essential that we and our partners ensure that people leaving care continue to get the support and advice they need as they make the transition to adulthood and independence.

“This strategy sets out how we will achieve this and demonstrates our ambition and intentions for this very vulnerable group.”

Durham County Council’s Cabinet will consider the Care Leavers Strategy 2015 – 2018 when they meet at Durham Town Hall, in the Market Place, Durham City, next Wednesday (16 Dec) at 10am.
