The Royal British Legion today announced the launch of the Legion Games. A new initiative from The Royal British Legion in their mission to aid and support the Armed Forces community.

Providing regular gaming content on its Twitch channel (www.twitch.tv/legiongamesuk), the Legion Games matches content creators in the UK with Armed Forces veterans to compete against each other in a variety of games. Viewers will be able to interact with those on screen and donate to the Legion Games cause directly on screen, helping power up veterans’ recovery.

“By launching the Legion Games, we hope to build on the existing community of Armed Forces personnel who enjoy gaming, whilst connecting them with an audience who otherwise may not know much about the lives of those who serve,” commented Chanel Blake, Head of Innovation and Planning at The Royal British Legion. “Much like challenge events and fun runs, gaming is another fun and social sport that brings people together, so the Legion Games is about embracing that culture and building a platform to raise money to help aid the fantastic work The Royal British Legion does to power up veterans’ recovery.”

“We can’t wait for the first stream on Friday 8 November and we’re excited for what the future holds.”

The first stream, taking place at 5pm GMT, features the iconic duo, Two Angry Gamers, playing against Armed Forces veterans such as Daniel and Ryan.

Daniel served in the Army for 16 years but after getting injured whilst serving and being medically discharged, gaming has become an even more important part of his life. He has described playing as a great way to keep in touch with his mates and says it helps with his mental health.

Ryan joined the Army at 16 and has recognised the similarities and shared skills between gaming and his time in the Army particularly around teamwork and communications skills.

The Royal British Legion offers sports and arts-based rehabilitation courses, provide mobility aids, specialist equipment and expert advice to ensure serving and ex-serving personnel receive the support they need to recover, physically and mentally. Donations made to the Legion Games streams will support this activity.

Tommy, one half of Two Angry Gamers commented, “I have family who’ve served in the Armed Forces, so being asked to be part of the very first Legion Games stream is very important to me on a personal level. We’d encourage everyone to tune in and donate on Friday, we are going to have a lot of fun, so you won’t want to miss it.”
