TyneMet students open counselling services centre for the community

Jan said: “I’ve always had an interest in psychology, I really enjoyed studying at TyneMet, when I completed the first course, I knew I was hooked and that it was something I really wanted to continue with.”

Over the years Jan’s career in counselling has seen her working as an Abuse Specialist and at charities such as Mind.

Jan set up Cameo, with two other former TyneMet students, Alison Smith and Shaun Mcccowie who have both studied and worked in the counselling profession for a number of years following other career paths.

TyneMet’s Teaching and Education Lecturer, Fiona Lawrence said: “Jan, Ali and Shaun recently completed a Level 3 Award in Education and Training to enhance their skills in being able to deliver quality training at CAMEO. It is always a privilege to see former students go on to achieve such success. We wish Jan and the team the very best of luck!”

CAMEO which stands for ‘Come And Meet Each Other’ was set up in 2012, providing support and advice for people offering 1:1 sessions and small group sessions.

Jan said: “Opening CAMEO has been a journey of self exploration, we want to offer high quality counselling services to North Tyneside and the wider community. Alongside counselling we aim to raise awareness about mental health and other wider services such as bereavement and grief counselling.”

CAMEO are running a number of workshops throughout November and December 2016 covering a number of issues around mental health. Would it be possible to give this a mention and include our email address & telephone number for those who may be interested to contact us for further details?
