“OUTSTANDING” staff at a Tyneside care home have been praised by industry regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Willowdene Care Home, on Victoria Road West, Hebburn, received an overall “Good” rating following an unannounced inspection – with the same rating in all five areas of the CQC report.
Inspectors spoke to more than a dozen residents, relatives, staff and visiting professionals during their visits to the home.
They quoted one relative who said: “It’s brilliant here, staff are outstanding.”
The report stated: “Staff interactions with people were attentive, kindly, encouraging and appropriate. We observed if people became distressed, staff responded immediately and knew how to support them to reduce their anxiety. A relative told us, “Staff are very tolerant and have a lot of empathy with people. No one is left upset.”
“Staff demonstrated a good knowledge of people’s preferences and interests. Records contained information to ensure people received personalised care that met their needs.
“There was a lively atmosphere in the home and staff spent time with people throughout the day. People and visitors told us it was always like this. A relative commented, “The atmosphere in the home is one of cheeriness and staff morale seems good.”
The report also highlighted the range of activities available to those living at the home, including recent day trips and links with community groups.
Inspectors wrote: “People had access to a range of activities along with entertainment and external trips. An enthusiastic activities person provided activities in the home.
“People’s comments included, “The activities are fantastic, there are plenty of activities. We have fairs, singers, karaoke and bingo”, “I read a lot, I don’t play dominoes now” and “I have dementia, staff try and stimulate me”.
“Links with the community were developed and people had the opportunity to go out on bus trips and to the shops. One relative said, “In good weather, days out are arranged. We’ve been to Beamish Museum and to the coast for fish and chips.”
“Children also visited and spent time with people as part of an intergenerational project. One person told us, “I love it when the children come in to sing.”
