THE Mayor will be flying the Commonwealth Flag on Monday 12 March as Redcar and Cleveland joins a series of international celebrations.

Being raised at 10.00am outside the Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart, the flag will be one of more than 900 like it – all raised at the same time throughout the Commonwealth.

The ceremony will be led by the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Karen King, who will read out a special message from The Queen celebrating the unity of the 53 nations.

Mayor King said: “It is an honour to be one of the locations across the Commonwealth to be raising a flag.

“It is a very unique way for communities throughout the Commonwealth to learn about the values for which it stands. As well as celebrating the unity that is shown between the 53 nations across the world joined under a single banner.”

As well as reading a message from the Commonwealth Secretary General, pupils from Normanby Primary School will sing ‘World in Union’ and lead guests – and members of the public – in singing The National Anthem – God Save the Queen.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the ceremony at 9.50am near the flagpoles at the Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart.
