North Yorkshire County Council Library Services have added new digital resources to further encourage learning and reading online at home or on the move.
The digital library services now include Ziptales, which is designed to motivate children to improve their reading. Ziptales offers a fun, safe online learning environment where children can gain confidence and enjoyment from reading through entertaining, interactive stories with animation, videos, quizzes and worksheets. The stories, which children can read on their own or with parents on any device or PC, range from learning the alphabet to learning grammar, rhymes, scary stories, funny stories and lots more.
County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, Executive Member for Library and Information Services, said: “Reading for pleasure can benefit the attainment and life chances of every child and this new service will encourage and develop that enjoyment of reading.”
For readers of all ages who enjoy graphic novels and comics, the popular digital range of e-books now includes ComicsPlus, which offers access to 25,000 e-graphic novels and e-comics, including Transformers, Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Garfield, My Little Pony, Dexter’s Laboratory, Star Trek, X-Files, G.I. Joe and Godzilla. All are streamed and are available at any time from any mobile device or PC.
Cllr Metcalfe added: “I’m pleased that even at a time of austerity we can offer access to additional resources that add value and variety to the digital services from North Yorkshire libraries.”
To browse all titles available from the library service, whether hard copy or digital, and to explore the full range of online resources, including Ziptales and ComicsPlus, library members can log on to the recently upgraded public catalogue at http://capitadiscovery.co.uk/northyorkshire. Ziptales can be found in the Skills and Learning menu. If you are not a member of the library, it is easy to join online or at www.northyorks.gov.uk/libraries or at your local library.
