A children’s dietetic from Newcastle has been selected to join Team GB’s women’s street hockey team at this summer’s Championships in Prague.

Sarah Mason, who works as a children’s dietetic assistant at the Great North Children’s Hospital, part of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, was drawn to the field of nutrition and diet whilst a graduate in sports studies, and in particular how they can affect the body.

On a daily basis, Sarah provides children and their families across the North East with support and advice to help children maintain their diet and nutritional needs during and after their stay at the Great North Children’s Hospital.

In addition to this, Sarah trains four times per week for tournaments with the Team GB team, using her skills and knowledge of nutrition to support her performance.

Speaking about her achievement, Sarah said: “I am extremely proud to have been selected for the Team GB’s street hockey team. I have been working very hard training for the trials, whilst also managing my shifts at the hospital, so to make the team is great.

“The dietetic team at the Great North Children’s Hospital have been really supportive, without the flexibility and support of the hospital I wouldn’t be able to take part in the games.”

“Not many people know what street hockey is, so I am looking forward to raising the profile of the sport to encourage more women to play.

“I’m really excited to get on the plane now to go to Prague. We are travelling out a few days earlier to support the men’s street hockey team in their tournament.”

Sarah joined the street hockey team after playing for Team GB’s first women’s ice hockey team in 2008.

She will fly out to Prague on the 31 May 2017 to join the team in the Championships in June; the tournament will begin on 3 June 2017 running over the course of two weeks.
