Screen Shot 2015-05-21 at 12.07.33DARLINGTON school children are being invited to take part in a special environmental initiative in the town next month (June).

BID company Distinct Darlington, formed to promote business and encourage a safe and welcoming town centre, is calling on youngsters aged between seven and 11, to join its team of Rangers between 15 and 19 June.

The Rangers play a key role, patrolling the streets, meeting shoppers and business owners and providing practical help with issues such as litter.

They also liaise with retailers and police to identify ways of making the town centre a better place for residents, businesses and visitors alike.

Along with joining the Rangers on patrol, the Junior Rangers will have the chance to use radio communications, visit a CCTV centre and even meet the police to find out more about their work in the town centre.

They will also learn about the environmental issues facing the town centre and be given the opportunity to offer their ideas on future improvements.

Then, as a memento of their time with the Distinct Darlington Rangers, each child will be given a photograph and cap and a certificate, making them honorary members of the Ranger team.

“This will be our third time we’ve invited school children to join our Rangers,” said Distinct Darlington manager Alex Hirst, “and it’s always a great experience for everyone involved.

“Not only do the children learn all sorts of skills but they also learn more about their town centre in an exciting way – and we know from past feedback that everyone really appreciates their involvement and the children have a great time”
