Much needed support for people living with dementia and their carers is now available in the Shildon area thanks to support from local businesses.
A free memory café will open its doors on the first Tuesday of every month offering drop in sessions from 1pm-2.30pm. It offers a safe environment for people affected by dementia to socialise and help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. A dementia advisor from the Alzheimer’s Society will be on hand to offer expert advice and guidance for those who attend.
Located at Chestnut Close communal lounge, the café is run by volunteers from Shildon Alive and has been made possible with support from homes and communities business livin, Health Express, Bishop Auckland College and livin’s repairs and maintenance contractor Mears.
Vicky Miller, livin community regeneration manager said: “We are delighted that this initiative has been possible. Using the facilities at Chestnut Close and with the help and guidance of the Alzheimer’s Society we can offer real support to those who need it most in our communities.”
