PUPILS at a North-East school have been working alongside experts from one of the region’s universities to explore the wonders of science.

Youngsters at Polam Hall School, in Darlington, have been investigating the mysteries of the universe alongside the Street Science team from Newcastle University, as part of British Science Week.

The team of university staff and students spent the day leading workshops with Year 7 and Year 8 pupils, looking at the more surprising and unusual aspects of science. Topics under investigation included how electrons travel through solid matter, how submarines sink on command, and even how the laser sounds in Star Wars were made.

Street Scientist Clare Fearon said: “We love engaging young people with science and showing them just how interesting the world really is. I hope it’s captured their imaginations, and encouraged them to consider a future in a scientific field.”

Aimee Jones, head of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Polam Hall, said: “We’re very grateful to the Street Science team for their time. They make so many concepts understandable, and show how they apply to real life.

“This week has been a fantastic celebration of science. Students have embraced it with so much creativity, enthusiasm and confidence, with today being the pinnacle of our celebrations.”

Other activities during the week included launching water-powered rockets, lessons on DNA coding, and a school assembly to discuss which British scientist should be featured on the £50 note.

Ms Jones added: “I have a real passion for science, and I wanted to share this with our students and help inspire the next generation of budding scientists. I must thank my amazing science team for putting on a great showcase of activities. I’m so proud of all our students for fully embracing British Science Week.”
