SUNDERLAND city centre once again has a supermarket, as Tesco Express opens its doors today at the Bridges (Thursday 12 June).
The new store, which occupies the former Sugarsole unit at Market Square, will now be open seven days a week from 7am until 10pm.
Tesco has been noticeably absent from the city since its closure in 2022, but its return reflects a continued focus on serving the city centre community.
And that promise has now been fulfilled, with the new-look store offering a range of essentials to shoppers.
Karen Eve, Centre Director at the Bridges, is delighted to welcome Tesco back into the centre.
“Having a supermarket in the heart of the city centre is something we know shoppers have been anxious for,” she said.
“And the fact that it sits outside of the centre means it is able to offer extended opening hours.
“We are very excited to have Tesco back and it will be a huge asset to the city.”
The arrival of Tesco is not the only new addition to the Bridges, with international jewellery brand Lovisa opening on Friday.
The fashion-forward company, which has more than 900 stores in 45 countries, is taking over the former Pigment and Toil art gallery in the centre.
