The North East of England is renowned for its rich musical heritage. From the early days of folk music to the emergence of punk and heavy metal scenes in the 1970s and 80s, the region has produced some of the most influential musicians in British music history. The 1960s saw the emergence of bands such as The Animals and The Rolling Stones who performed at venues like the Club A-Go-Go in Newcastle. More recently, the North East has been home to successful indie bands such as Maximo Park and The Futureheads, as well as chart-topping pop acts like Cheryl and Little Mix. The region also hosts a number of annual music festivals including the Sunderland City Festival and the popular Evolution Festival.
