Roads will be closed at various times between Friday 27 October and Wednesday 1 November 2017 as a major parade takes place on the Tyne Bridge.
The Tyne Bridge will play host to an epic civil rights performance on Sunday (29 October 2017) commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King being awarded an honorary degree by Newcastle University.
Freedom City 2017 is a city-wide programme with a range of events taking place throughout the year.
The main roads affected in Newcastle include the Tyne Bridge – A167 (Central Motorway East) between New Bridge Street and Gateshead Council boundary – which will be closed on Sunday 29 October 2017 between 1pm and 8.30pm.
It is proposed to close the following roads on Sunday 29 October 2017 as part of the parade:

In addition to the above closures, there will also be some restrictions and closures in place before and after the event to ensure public safety.
No vehicles that are 3.4 metres wide or 3.4m metres high will be allowed along:
(a) Tyne Bridge (in both directions) – from its junction with Pilgrim Street Roundabout in a southerly direction for its entire length within Newcastle City Boundary.
The restrictions in (a) above will be in place from:
- 10pm on 27 October to 5am on 28 October 2017
- 10pm on 28 October to 5am on 29 October 2017
- 10pm on 30 October to 5am on 31 October 2017 (contingency)
- 10pm on 31 October to 5am on 1 November 2017 (contingency)
